Some choice utterances for you to snigger at!
"In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is
the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing."
Theodore Roosevelt.
"We spent a lot of money on Education, the NHS,
and MP's pensions and expenses. The rest we just squandered." Tony Blair. OK, he didn't actually say this, but that doesn't mean that it isn't true !
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds, and
fast cars. The rest I just squandered." George Best.
"As you get older, three things happen. First, your
memory goes.... and I can't remember the other two! Norman Wisdom.
"The most dangerous thing in the world is to try to leap
a chasm in two bounds" David Lloyd George. Very perceptive for a politician.
"I'm a pretty straight sort of guy"
Tony Blair, 1997. We're lost for words, really...
"The traditional subject areas have been hijacked to promote fashionable causes such as gender awareness,
the environment, and anti-racism, while teachers are expected to help to achieve the Government's social goals instead of
imparting a body of academic knowledge to their pupils"
Civitas Report The Corruption of the Curriculum, June 2007. A result then, Tony?
"My three priorities will be, Education, Education, Education" Tony Blair, to rapturous applause, on taking office in 1997, but see above...
"There are some promises that are best not kept"
Anonymous politician. Lets face it, it could be any (or all) of them!
"I will be the Prime Minister you can trust"
Gordon Brown in early May 2007, shortly after taking a penny off the base rate of income tax with great
fanfare, then quietly abolishing the starting rate of tax to claw it all back. So much for "substance over spin"!
"We'll negotiate withdrawal from the EEC which has drained our natural resources and destroyed jobs."
Tony Blair in his Sedgefield electoral manifesto in 1982. (Yes..1982!) Plus ça change,
eh Tony?
"I did what I thought was right, at the time"
Tony Blair, 10May07. Fair comment, but you should have done what WE thought was right.
That's why it's called a democracy!
"My only regret in life is that I did not drink more champagne"
John Maynard Keynes. Us too, but at least we can still work on it! Happy New Year!
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb
contesting the vote."
Benjamin Franklin. Some time ago!
"The United Kingdom has experienced the biggest increase in taxes across the Western world since
Labour came to power."
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Report, December 2006. And a Merry Christmas to you
too, Gordon!
"There are 20 million more National Insurance Numbers than there are people in the country"
David Blunkett in 2002, when he was Home Secretary. It makes you think that "Not fit for purpose" was, perhaps, a
little understated. It also, perhaps, explains why the State Pension Scheme is in such a mess.
"Our new Government will be whiter than white....."
Tony Blair in 1997. (HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA ....)
"The Home Office does not have adequate controls to reconcile the payroll and personnel records
to determine exact staff numbers. Personnel records were difficult to locate and some could not be found at all"
National Audit Office report on the Home Office accounts, December 2006. In other words, not only
do they not know how many people they employ, but they don't know who they are! So, what do you think HM Revenue &
Customs would say to all you guys (and gals) running your businesses, if that's what they found in your Company? Would you
still be operating the next day? Answers on a postcard (to your MP.)
"We must all bear responsibility for what is happening in Iraq"
Tony Blair 6Dec06. Presumably the royal "We", Tony.
"Is it really beyond the collective wits of government and health administrators to tackle this problem?"
Tony Blair in 1996 talking about mixed sex wards in NHS hospitals. It apparently is, leaving aside the assumption that
government actually have any wits, since, 10 years (and many billions of pounds) on, 20% are still treated
in mixed sex wards, and the figure is rising.
